Mediaworks-built Royal Mint Coin Hunt app launches
Continuing our app development success, Mediaworks is pleased to announce the launch of the Coin Hunt app we designed and developed for The Royal Mint.
Available to download for free from the App Store and Google Play, the app has been created to support the rollout of The Royal Mint’s 26 new 10p coins. Displaying the A-Z of what makes Britain great, each coin features a quintessentially British item or persona, from James Bond to good old fish and chips!
The coins will be released into circulation systematically and the Great British Coin Hunt app we created has been launched to help users keep track of the coins in their collection. Using image recognition technology, users can scan the coins they collect to create a digital record of them.
The app also features map functionality, which shows users where coins have been found in the UK. It also shows where coins have been released and details of swap shop events, to help users find the coins they need to complete their collection.
We wanted to create an app that would not only appeal to the coin collector audience The Royal Mint usually connects with, but also build on our previous trail app experience by helping nurture a sense of community through gamification elements. We have done so by showing the rarity of the coins and how many of each has been found and logged via the app.
Adding a competitive edge to the hunt, the more coins that are scanned and logged, the more achievements and awards will be unlocked within the app — with users earning badges on their profile as proof of their efforts. This gamification element broadens the appeal of the app.
In addition, we designed and incorporated a ‘Create-a-coin’ feature. It allows users to use Great British Coin Hunt elements and other creative assets to design their own coin. These can then be saved in a digital wallet and shared amongst friends, further widening the appeal of the Coin Hunt app itself.
Speaking of the app, Mediaworks’ Creative Director Andrew Blenkinsop said: “To design and develop an app of this scale for The Royal Mint is hugely exciting and we’re incredibly proud of the end product we have delivered. We hope both coin collectors and other users will enjoy using the app and the functionality we have included.”
